Celebrating the life of

Walter Irvin Mitchell Jr.

January 18, 1943 - December 14, 2024

Walter Irvin Mitchell Jr.

Walt Irvin Mitchell Jr. passed away peacefully on December 14, 2024, at Hospice Savannah. Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on January 18, 1943, Walt lived a full and remarkable life marked by dedication, adventure, and love.

A proud member of the Tuscaloosa High School Class of 1961 and the Class of 1965 at Henderson State College, Walt went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1969, with deployments in Germany and Vietnam. During his service, he earned the Bronze Star for his exemplary courage and dedication in Vietnam.

Walt’s passion for adventure extended beyond the battlefield as he became a Formula 1 race car driver. In 1970, he transitioned into the shipping industry, beginning his career in New York City with Sea Train Lines Inc. He retired in 2009 after 25 years with ZIM Integrated Shipping Services in Savannah, Georgia.

Walt married JoAnne Alger in 1972 in Kinnelon, New Jersey. The couple began their married life in Atlanta, Georgia, before settling on Wilmington Island, Georgia, in 1995. Their 52 years together were filled with love, laughter, and countless memories.

Deeply involved in his community, Walt was a member of the Propeller Club of the Port of Savannah since 1995 and served as President of the Savannah Maritime Association from 2004 until his passing. He was also a devoted member of the Alee Shriners/Alee Temple of Savannah, the Masonic Lodge on Tybee Island, and Oatland Island Wildlife Center (2014-2021). His love for camaraderie extended to the Southern Cruisers Motorcycle Club, where he was a former member.

Walt’s passions were as diverse as his accomplishments. An avid Alabama football fan, he proudly cheered, “Roll Tide!” He had a special love for jokes, race cars, horses, and, most importantly, being “Papa” to his beloved family.

Walt is survived by his wife, JoAnne “Jo” Mitchell, daughters Amanda “Mandie” Mitchell and granddaughter Carsen Mitchell of Savannah, GA; Katy Mitchell and grandson Magnus Yatro of Garden City, GA; cousin Libby Ball of Malvern, AR; sister-in-law Patty Hoag of Savanah, GA; cousin Carolyn Williams of Memphis, TN; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. His legacy of love, strength, and humor will be cherished by all who knew him.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Fox & Weeks Islands Chapel on Janurary 18, 2025. A memorial service will begin at 11:00 am following the visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN, and Tunnel to Towers.

GUEST BOOK

Walt was a very special person who accepted this Ohio girl into the family when I lived in Savannah - far from my own. His stories were one of a kind. He was a champion of all those close to his girls and made an impact in my life with his big hugs, stately stature, brilliant smile and huge heart that was always waiting when we walked into the kitchen. My life was blessed for the moments he will be deeply missed.
